On Sunday, December 31, we ended the old year and began the new with a service of worship based in part on the service of covenant renewal that John Wesley used with his followers during the early years of the Methodist movement. This service of worship reminds us that our relationship with God is more than just a casual acquaintance; it is a relationship rooted in solemn covenant that offers unbreakable promises and makes absolute demands. It is a defining relationship that touches and transforms every aspect of our being. That is why we prayed together:

I am not my own. I am yours alone. Make me into what you will. Rank me with those you will. Put me to use for you. Put me to suffering for you. Let me be employed for you. Let me be laid aside for you. Let me be lifted high for you. Let me be brought low for you. Let me be full or let me be empty. Let me have all things or let me have nothing. With a willing heart, I freely give everything to your pleasure and disposal.

Wesley Covenant Renewal Service

On Sunday, January 7, during our celebration of the Epiphany and Baptism of Jesus, we baptized Thezra Ceniceros as a child of God and welcomed her into membership in this congregation of Christ’s church. As part of that welcome, we remembered our own baptismal vows to support the church by our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness. And we made the following promise to Thezra:

We give thanks for all that God has already given you and we welcome you in Christian love. As members together with you in the body of Christ and in this congregation of The United Methodist Church, we renew our covenant faithfully to participate in the ministries of the Church by our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness, that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ.

United Methodist Service of Baptismal Covenant

During the service on January 7, we also celebrated Holy Communion. After the service we gathered for our monthly fellowship potluck lunch. Thank you to all who brought food to share.

On Sunday, January 14, we celebrated the birth of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and received a special offering for Human Relations Sunday. Human Relations Sunday, which is traditionally held on the Sunday closest to the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, is one of six special offerings authorized by The United Methodist Church. This offering supports social justice and outreach ministries that empower all God’s children to realize their full potential as human beings in relationship with one another.

With the authorization of the Church Governing Council, a new financial viability task force met on Tuesday, January 16, to develop an accurate understanding of the church’s financial position and to explore ways of putting the church onto a firm financial footing for the days and months ahead. The task force has just begun its work and will be meeting again soon to continue taking a hard and realistic look at where we stand and where we are going.

Saturday, January 13, was the hundredth anniversary of the dedication of the current Echo Park United Methodist Church building. During the century of its existence this building has become an iconic symbol for the community of what a church should and can be. In addition to gracing the community with its lovely architecture, it has also served as a place where the people of God gather for worship and fellowship, where the hungry are fed and the lonely find companionship, where marginalized communities meet to organize and artists come together for creative inspiration, where immigrants find a hospitable welcome and people seeking freedom from addictions find support…

During worship on Sunday, January 21, we celebrated the vision of our ancestors and the faithfulness of generations that have kept that vision alive. Our building is aging as all things do… sometimes gracefully, and sometimes not so gracefully. Its walls are cracked, its ceiling leaks, its circuit breakers break, its plumbing is occasionally unreliable, and its foundation is sinking. But one thing will always remain true… the community it has housed continues to do God’s work to build God’s loving and inclusive kindom. Worship was followed by a wonderful potluck lunch. Thank you to all who brought food to share.

The 2024 Los Angeles Homeless Count took place throughout the County on January 23, 24, and 25. As it has for several years, Echo Park United Methodist Church hosted the Echo Park portion of the count on Thursday evening from 8:00 p.m. to midnight. More than 80 people participated, including a few from our own congregation. We anticipate hearing the results of this year’s count in April.

Work progresses on preparing the downstairs to provide hospitality for immigrants who have been assigned asylum hearings. Thank you to all who took part in our work days on January 12, 13, 26 and 27. We are planning additional work days on February 2 and 10.

Once the hospitality center opens in mid-February, we will provide shelter for up to 72 hours as people make plans and preparations to go to more permanent dwellings. Most of the people that we will be serving will be those who arrive on the buses being sent to Los Angeles from Texas. Services will be provide by the Los Angeles Welcome Collective which consists of CHIRLA, CARECEN, CLUE, EPIC, the California-Pacific United Methodist Annual Conference, the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, and other immigrant serving organizations. We are anticipating a grand opening celebration in mid-March. Keep watch for more information.

ENERO DE 2024

El domingo 31 de diciembre, terminamos el año viejo y comenzamos el nuevo con un servicio de adoración basado en parte en el servicio de renovación del pacto que John Wesley usó con sus seguidores durante los primeros años del movimiento metodista. Este servicio de adoración nos recuerda que nuestra relación con Dios es más que un simple conocimiento casual; es una relación arraigada en un pacto solemne que ofrece promesas inquebrantables y hace demandas absolutas. Es una relación definitoria que toca y transforma cada aspecto de nuestro ser. Es por eso que oramos juntos:

No soy mío. Soy solo tuyo. Conviérteme en lo que quieras. Clasifícame con los que quieras. Ponme a tu uso. Hazme sufrir por ti. Déjame ser empleado para ti. Déjame ser apartado para ti. Déjame ser levantado por ti. Déjame ser humillado por ti. Déjame estar lleno o déjame estar vacío. Déjame tener todas las cosas o déjame no tener nada. Con un corazón dispuesto, doy libremente todo a tu placer y disposición.

Servicio de Renovación del Pacto de Wesley

El domingo 7 de enero, durante nuestra celebración de la Epifanía y el Bautismo de Jesús, bautizamos a Thezra Ceniceros como hija de Dios y le dimos la bienvenida a esta congregación de la iglesia de Cristo. Como parte de esa bienvenida, recordamos nuestros propios votos bautismales de apoyar a la iglesia con nuestras oraciones, nuestra presencia, nuestros dones, nuestro servicio y nuestro testimonio. E hicimos la siguiente promesa a Thezra:

Damos gracias por todo lo que Dios ya te ha dado y te damos la bienvenida en el amor cristiano. Servicio Metodista Unido del Pacto Bautismal

Durante el servicio del 7 de enero, también celebramos la Santa Comunión. Después del servicio, nos reunimos para nuestro almuerzo compartido mensual de compañerismo. Gracias a todos los que trajeron comida para compartir.

El domingo 14 de enero, celebramos el nacimiento del Reverendo Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., y recibimos una ofrenda especial para el Domingo de Relaciones Humanas. El Domingo de Relaciones Humanas, que tradicionalmente se celebra el domingo más cercano al feriado de Martin Luther King, Jr., es una de las seis ofrendas especiales autorizadas por La Iglesia Metodista Unida. Esta ofrenda apoya los ministerios de justicia social y de alcance que empoderan a todos los hijos de Dios para que desarrollen todo su potencial como seres humanos en relación unos con otros.

Con la autorización del Concilio de Gobierno de la Iglesia, un nuevo grupo de trabajo de viabilidad financiera se reunió el martes 16 de enero para desarrollar una comprensión precisa de la posición financiera de la Iglesia y para explorar formas de poner a la Iglesia en una base financiera firme para los días y meses venideros. El grupo de trabajo acaba de comenzar su labor y se reunirá de nuevo en breve para seguir examinando de manera detenida y realista dónde nos encontramos y hacia dónde vamos.

El sábado 13 de enero se cumplieron cien años de la dedicación del actual edificio de la Iglesia Metodista Unida de Echo Park. Durante el siglo de su existencia, este edificio se ha convertido en un símbolo icónico para la comunidad de lo que debe y puede ser una iglesia. Además de adornar la comunidad con su hermosa arquitectura, también ha servido como un lugar donde el pueblo de Dios se reúne para la adoración y el compañerismo, donde los hambrientos son alimentados y los solitarios encuentran compañía, donde las comunidades marginadas se reúnen para organizarse y los artistas se reúnen en busca de inspiración creativa, donde los inmigrantes encuentran una bienvenida hospitalaria y las personas que buscan la libertad de las adicciones encuentran apoyo…

Durante la adoración del domingo 21 de enero, celebramos la visión de nuestros antepasados y la fidelidad de las generaciones que han mantenido viva esa visión. Nuestro edificio está envejeciendo como todas las cosas… a veces con gracia, y a veces no con tanta gracia. Sus paredes están agrietadas, su techo tiene goteras, sus disyuntores se rompen, sus tuberías son ocasionalmente poco confiables y sus cimientos se están hundiendo. Pero una cosa siempre será cierta… la comunidad que este edificio ha albergado continúa haciendo la obra de Dios para construir el reino amoroso e inclusivo de Dios. La adoración fue seguida por un maravilloso almuerzo compartido. Gracias a todos los que trajeron comida para compartir.

El Conteo de Personas sin Hogar de Los Ángeles 2024 se llevó a cabo en todo el condado los días 23, 24 y 25 de enero. Como lo ha hecho durante varios años, la Iglesia Metodista Unida de Echo Park organizó la parte del conteo de Echo Park el jueves por la noche desde las 8:00 p.m. hasta la medianoche. Participaron más de 80 personas, entre ellas algunas de nuestra propia congregación. Esperamos aprender los resultados del conteo de este año en abril.

El trabajo progresa en la preparación del salón de abajo para proporcionar hospitalidad a los inmigrantes a quienes se les ha asignado audiencias de asilo. Gracias a todos los que participaron en nuestros días de trabajo los días 12, 13, 26 y 27 de enero. Estamos planeando días de trabajo adicionales el 2 y 10 de febrero.

Una vez que el centro de hospitalidad abra a mediados de febrero, brindaremos refugio por hasta 72 horas mientras las personas hacen planes y preparativos para ir a viviendas más permanentes. La mayoría de las personas a las que serviremos serán las que lleguen en los autobuses que están siendo mandados a Los Ángeles desde Texas. Los servicios serán proporcionados por el Colectivo de Bienvenida de Los Ángeles, que consiste en CHIRLA, CARECEN, CLUE, EPIC, la Conferencia Anual Metodista Unida de California-Pacífico, la Diócesis Episcopal de Los Ángeles y otras organizaciones que sirven a los inmigrantes.
