February has turned out to be an eventful month.

Though Punxsatawney Phil predicted an earlier than usual spring in Gobbler’s Knob, Pennsylvania, this has not been the case in Los Angeles, California. We have actually seen a longer, colder, and more severe winter than usual.

THE CHURCH BUILDING

By now, most of you will have heard that the atmospheric river that passed through Southern California February 4 to 7 affected the church building in two significant ways:

1. There was significant flooding in the basement, primarily in the large fellowship hall where we had been planning to provide temporary hospitality for asylum-seekers who had been bussed to Los Angeles from Texas. Most of this water did not come through the roof or the walls, but through cracks in the foundation caused by the constantly shifting ground on which our church building stands.
2. Leaks in the Tally Room and Hild Chapel inspired us to turn our attention upward, on the assumption that they most likely originated in the church tower. What we discovered was that the ceiling had collapsed on the top level of the tower, just below the dome. That would have been troubling enough. However, the collapsed tower revealed significant damage to the wooden structure responsible for holding the dome in place. As a consequence, the dome itself was beginning to sag and seemed to be in danger of imminent collapse. That observation was subsequently confirmed by the structural engineer sent to investigate by our insurance company. His assessment was that the dome could collapse at any time, taking the tower and much of the building with it. He warned that there was no place in the church building safe for human occupancy.

In response, the Church’s Governing Council immediately took steps to close the building. Worship services for Transfiguration Sunday (February 11), and Ash Wednesday (February 14) were taken online. Worship for United Women in Faith Sunday (February 18) was held outdoors (at the far end of the church parking lot). Our tenants were told to vacate the premises and to remove any belongings that they couldn’t live without. Services to our unhoused neighbors were moved to safer locations (principally Silver Lake Community Church). Twelve-step groups scrambled to find alternative meeting locations. And all single-use events scheduled for the near future were cancelled until further notice. Please note that we have NOT been red- or yellow-tagged by the city, even though that could potentially happen in the near future.  We have unilaterally made the decision to close the building on the advice of a qualified structural engineer and our insurance company. Our primary commitment is to keep everybody safe!

So what are we doing now?

1. We have been in touch with our District Superintendent and other leaders from the West District to let them know what has happened and to seek their support moving forward. Already, they have put us in contact with reputable structural engineers, architects, demolition contractors, and building contractors that may be able to assist us both with our immediate needs and with the development of longer-term plans. Of  course, this is going to cost a lot of money.  While we may get some assistance from our insurance company, it is unlikely that they will cover all of our expenses. So, we are going to need the financial support of our wider United Methodist connection. In addition to seeking funding from the District Union, I will also be contacting the Office of Congregational Loans to explore the possibility of receiving a conditional grant to cover the expenses we are going to incur.
2. We have been in touch with City Council District 13. They have sent people to the property to discuss the damage and to explore how the city might be able to help us. There is a possibility that some city funds might be available to help, especially given official disaster declarations by the state and the city.
3. We will be meeting with the first of four structural engineering firms on Monday, February 26. During this meeting they will examine the extent of the damage, develop an initial assessment of what is required and provide us with an estimate of what their services to us will cost. We will be meeting with at least three other structural engineers during the week for the same purpose.
4. We are beginning to explore different deconstruction/demolition firms to solicit bids  for the removal of the tower, should it be necessary. We hope to have all bids in place by no later than March 8.
5. We have made an initial application to the Lowe’s Hometowns Foundation for the possibility of a major capital grant. Pray that we make it through the first cut of the decision process.
6. This coming Sunday, February 25, we will be worshipping at La Plaza United Methodist Church in El Pueblo de Los Ángeles Historic Park. We hope you will either join us there at 10:30 a.m. or online for our weekly worship service. We thank Pastor Phillip Valdes and the La Plaza UMC congregation for their hospitality. We are also looking at other potential sites for ongoing worship.

Please watch the church website and your email boxes for updated information as time goes along. So much still remains uncertain about what is going to happen and when!

Thank you to all who took time to help with our workdays. A great deal was accomplished to prepare the Basement Fellowship Hall to provide short-term hospitality to asylum seekers sent to Los Angeles from Texas. Unfortunately, the hospitality center will now need to be moved to another location. Thank you to those who have helped empty the basement and move items to a safer space.

AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH

We give thanks for the contributions made to our church, our nation, and our society by Americans of African descent. We are better for the contributions of people who have been given so much and too often received so little in return.

EL CUARTO DE RESONIDO

Febrero ha resultado ser un mes lleno de acontecimientos.

Aunque Punxsatawney Phil predijo una primavera más temprana de lo habitual en Gobbler’s Knob, Pensilvania, este no ha sido el caso en Los Ángeles, California. De hecho, hemos visto un invierno más largo, más frío y más severo de lo habitual.

EL EDIFICIO DE LA IGLESIA

Por ahora, la mayoría de ustedes habrán oído que el río atmosférico que pasó por el sur de California del 4 al 7 de febrero afectó el edificio de la iglesia de dos maneras significativas:

1. Hubo inundaciones significativas en el sótano, principalmente en el gran salón de compañerismo donde habíamos estado planeando brindar hospitalidad temporal a los solicitantes de asilo que habían sido transportados en autobús a Los Ángeles desde Texas. La mayor parte de esta agua no vino a través del techo o las paredes, sino a través de grietas en los cimientos causadas por el suelo en constante movimiento en el que se encuentra el edificio de nuestra iglesia.
2. Las goteras en la Aula Tally y la Capilla Hild nos inspiraron a dirigir nuestra atención hacia arriba, asumiendo que lo más probable fue que se originaran en la torre de la iglesia. Lo que descubrimos fue que el techo se había derrumbado en el nivel superior de la torre, justo debajo de la cúpula. Eso habría sido bastante preocupante. Sin embargo, el colapso de la torre reveló daños significativos en la estructura de madera responsable de mantener la cúpula en su lugar. Como consecuencia, la cúpula en sí estaba comenzando a hundirse y parecía estar en peligro de colapso inminente. Esa observación fue confirmada posteriormente por el ingeniero estructural enviado a investigar por nuestra compañía de seguros. Su evaluación fue que la cúpula podría colapsar en cualquier momento, llevándose consigo la torre y gran parte del edificio. Advirtió que no había lugar en el edificio de la iglesia seguro para la ocupación humana.

En respuesta, el Concilio de Gobierno de la Iglesia tomó medidas inmediatas para cerrar el edificio. Los servicios de adoración para el Domingo de Transfiguración (11 de febrero) y el Miércoles de Ceniza (14 de febrero) se llevaron a cabo en línea. El servicio de adoración para el Domingo de las Mujeres Unidas en la Fe (18 de febrero) se llevó a cabo al aire libre. A nuestros inquilinos se les dijo que desalojaran las instalaciones y que se llevaran cualquier pertenencia sin la que no pudieran vivir. Los servicios a nuestros vecinos sin hogar se trasladaron a lugares más seguros (principalmente la Iglesia Comunitaria de Silver Lake). Los grupos de doce pasos se apresuraron a encontrar lugares alternativos para las reuniones. Y todos los eventos de un solo uso programados para el futuro cercano fueron cancelados hasta nuevo aviso. Entonces, ¿qué estamos haciendo ahora?

1. Hemos estado en contacto con nuestro Superintendente de Distrito y otros líderes del Distrito Oeste para informarles lo que ha sucedido y buscar su apoyo en el futuro. Ya nos han puesto en contacto con ingenieros estructurales, arquitectos, contratistas de demolición y contratistas de construcción de buena reputación que pueden ayudarnos tanto con nuestras necesidades inmediatas como con el desarrollo de planes a largo plazo. Por supuesto, esto va a costar mucho dinero. Si bien es posible que obtengamos alguna ayuda de nuestra compañía de seguros, es poco probable que cubran todos nuestros gastos. Por lo tanto, vamos a necesitar el apoyo financiero de nuestra conexión metodista unida más amplia.
