A Lenten Devotion for Saturday, March 21, 2020

Day 2 of Governor Gavin Newsom’s Stay-At-Home Order for the State of California

READING FROM THE SCRIPTURES

You who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty… will not fear the terror of the night, or the arrow that flies by day, or the pestilence that stalks in darkness, or the destruction that wastes at noonday. (Psalm 91:1, 5-6, NRSV, alt.)

MEDITATING ON THE WORD

There is widespread fear in the world around us. We hear it in the voices of neighbors worrying about the possibility that they or their loved ones might become infected with COVID-19. We see it in the eyes of shoppers scrambling to stock up on essential supplies in anticipation of widespread lockdowns and quarantines. We sense it in the demeanor of politicians announcing increasingly stringent restrictions on how we will be allowed to live our lives. And, we feel it in our own hearts as we imagine a future that seems to be filling with ominous and unpredictable threats.

In the context of this uncomfortably terrifying world, Psalm 91 invites us not to be afraid. It does not do this because the terrors of the night are unreal. Unlike the monsters that populate the nighttime imaginings of children, the terrors of the night are all too real, as are the arrows that fly by day, the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, and the destruction that wastes at noonday. 

Our world is filled with dangers, among which, COVID-19 is only the most recent. These dangers are always threatening to disrupt or destroy our lives and communities. It’s just that most of the time we aren’t aware of them. To paraphrase Tommy Lee Jones’ character in the 1997 movie Men in Black, “the only thing that lets [us] get on with [our] hopeful little lives is that [we] don’t know about it.”

Such ignorance is not the antidote to fear that is being advocated by the poet of Psalm 91. We don’t avoid fear by pretending that scary things like COVID-19 don’t exist. We confront fear by remembering that we live in the shelter of the Most High, and abide in the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 91 invites us to see God in the midst of the very real dangers that threaten us and trust that God will always be there to help us deal with them and get through them.

This trust does not give us an excuse to act in ways that are foolhardy or irresponsible. We must do what we must do to protect ourselves, our families, and our communities. Let us always remember that Jesus rebuked the tempter who cited Psalm 91 in an effort to entice Jesus to throw himself off the pinnacle of the Jerusalem temple: “Do not put your Sovereign God to the test!” (Matthew 4:5-7; cf. Deuteronomy 6:16)

So, even as we follow the guidelines being set by our federal, state, and local governments ─ even as we wash our hands, sanitize our belongings, cover our mouths, maintain an appropriate social distance, and stay at home ─ let us remember that God is with us in this and in all the crises of our lives. We live in the shelter of the Most High and abide in the shadow of the Almighty.

Even in the midst of this terrifying Lent, God is still a God of Life, and we are still a people of resurrection.

PRAYING FOR OURSELVES AND THE WORLD

God who walks with us through the terrors of the night, God who guards us from the arrows that fly by day, the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, and the destruction that wastes at noonday, we give you thanks for your gifts to us of life, and community, and love.

During this time when we shelter at home to protect ourselves and others from the COVID-19 pandemic, we pray that you will open our hearts and minds to recognize your presence among us. You, Most High, are our shelter in this time of crisis. You, Almighty, are the shadow that shields us in this era of fear.

Our hearts break for those who suffer and worry the most during these challenging days:

• Those who have already fallen ill from COVID-19;
• Those who have lost friends and loved ones to the disease that this virus causes;
• Those who find themselves alone without communities to support them in their time of isolation;
• Those who have no home in which to shelter;
• Those who, having lost jobs and income sources, now worry about how they will pay their rent and provide for their own and their families’ needs;
• Those who don’t have adequate access to medical care;
• Those locked away in places where COVID-19 threatens to spread unimpeded.

Be with these, your children, that they too will know your comforting, consoling, and healing presence! To the extent that it is possible, may we reach out as a community of your people to provide them with care and support so that they too might know your love and grace.

Be with the caregivers and first-responders… the scientists and medical researchers… the politicians and policy makers… the social workers and those who provide essential services…! Give them wisdom to make correct decisions… strength to carry on with their duties… courage to do what is necessary… and compassion to remember those whose lives and wellbeing depend upon them! Keep them safe and healthy!

In this time when fear threatens to overwhelm us, we turn to you in trust. Hold our hearts and minds in your gracious love that we may someday soon emerge from this crisis ready and able to rebuild what has been lost. During this strangest of all Lenten seasons, remind us again and again that you are a God of Life, and that we are a people of resurrection.

Una Devoción Cuaresmal para el Sábado, el 21 de Marzo 2020

Día 2 de la Orden de Quedarse-En-Casa del Gobernador Gavin Newsom para el Estado de California

 El que habita al abrigo del Altísimo morará bajo la sombra del Omnipotente… no temerá al terror nocturne ni a la saeta que vuele de día,  ni a la pestilencia que ande en la oscuridad, ni a mortandad que en medio del día destruya. (Salmo 91:1, 5-6, RVR 1995)

MEDITANDO EN LA PALABRA

Hay un temor extendido en el mundo alrededor de nosotros. Lo oímos en las voces de los vecinos que se preocupan por las posibilidades de que ellos o sus seres queridos se pudieran haber hecho infectados con el COVID-19. Lo vemos en los ojos de los compradores que luchan para abastecerse de suministros esenciales en previsión de cierres y cuarentenas extendidos. Lo percibimos en la actitud de los políticos que anuncian restricciones cada vez más estrictas sobre cómo se nos permitirá vivir nuestras vidas. Y, lo sentimos en nuestros mismos corazones a medida que imaginamos un futuro que parece llenarse de con amenzas ominosas e impredecibles.

En el contexto de este mundo incómodamente aterrador, el Salmo 91 nos invita no tener miedo. No lo hace porque los terrores nocturnes son irreales. A diferencia de los monstruos que pueblan las imaginaciones nocturnas de los niños, los terrores nocturnas son demasiado reales, al igual que las saetas que vuelan de día, la pestilencia que anda en la oscuridad, y la mortandad que en medio del día destruye.  

Nuestro mundo se llena con peligros, entre los que el COVID-19 solamente es el más reciente. Estos peligros siempre están amenazando con perturbar o destruir nuestras vidas y comunidades. Es sólo que la mayor parte del tiempo no somos conscientes de ellos. Para parafrasear el personaje de Tommy Lee Jones en la película de 1997 Hombres de Negro, “la única cosa que [nos] permite seguir con [nuestras] pequeñas vidas esperanzadas es que no [sabemos] nada sobre ello.”

Tal ignorancia no es el antídoto para el miedo que está siendo propuesto por el poeta de Salmo 91. No evitamos el miedo pretendiendo que cosas aterradoras como COVID-19 no existen. Nos enfrentamos al miedo recordando que habitamos al abrigo del Altísimo y moramos bajo la sombra del Omnipotente. El Salmo 91 nos invita a ver a Dios en medio de los peligros muy reales que nos amenazan y a confiar en que Dios siempre estará presente para ayudarnos a tratar con y pasar por ellos.

Esta confianza no nos da una excusa para actuar de maneras que son insensatos o irresponsibles. Debemos hacer lo que debemos hacer para proteger a nosotros mismos, a nuestras familias, y a nuestras comunidades. Recordemos siempre que Jesús reprendió el tentador que citó el Salmo 91 para atraerlo a tirarse del pináculo del templo de Jerusalén: “No tentarás al Señor tu Dios.” (Mateo 4:5-7; cf. Deuteronomio 6:16)

Así que, incluso mientras seguimos las directrices establecidas por los gobiernos federal, estatal, y local – incluso mientras nos lavamos las manos, disinfectamos nuestras pertenencias, nos tapamos las bocas, mantenemos una distancia social apropiada, y nos quedamos en casa – recordemos que Dios está con nosotros en esta y en todas las crisis de nuestras vidas. Habitamos al abrigo del Altísimo y moramos bajo la sombra del Omnipotente 

Incluso en medio de esta Cuaresma aterrador, Dios todavía es un Dios de Vida, y nosotros todavía somos un pueblo de resurrección.

ORANDO POR NOSOTROS MISMOS Y POR EL MUNDO

Dios que camina con nosotros a través de los terrores nocturnes, Dios que nos guarda de las saetas que vuelan de día, la pestilencia que anda en la oscuridad, y la mortandad que en medio del día destruye, te damos gracias por tus regalos para nosotros de la vida, de la comunidad, y del amor.

Durante este tiempo cuando nos refugiamos en casa para proteger a nosotros mismos y a los demás de la pandemia de COVID-19,  oramos que abrirás nuestros corazones y mentes para reconocer tu presencia entre nosotros. Tú, Altísimo, eres nuestro refugio en este tiempo de crisis. Tú, Omnipotente, eres la sombra que nos protege en esta era de miedo.

Nuestros corazones se rompen para aquellos que sufran y se preocupen durante estos días difíciles:

• Aquellos que ya se han enfermado del COVID-19;
• Aquellos que han perdido amigos y seres queridos a la enfermedad causada por este virus;
• Aquellos que se encuentran solos sin comunidades para darles apoyo en este momento de aislamiento;
• Aquellos que no tienen viviendas en las que pueden refugiarse;
• Aquellos que, al haber perdido empleos y fuentes de ingresos, ahora se preocupan sobre cómo van a pagar su alquiler y satisfacer sus propias necesidades y las de sus familias;
• Aquellos que no tienen suficiente acceso a la atención médica;
• Aquellos que están encarcelados en lugares donde el COVID-19 amenza con propagarse sin obstáculos.

¡Esté con estos, tus hijos, para que ellos también conocerán tu presencia reconfortante, consoladora y curativa! En la medida de lo posible, alcancemos como una comunidad de tu pueblo para proporcionarles cuidado y apoyo para que ellos también conozcan tu amor y gracia!

¡Esté con los cuidadores y los profesionales de primeros auxilios… los científicos y los investigadores médicos… los politicos y los fabricantes de política… los trabajadores sociales y aquellos que proporcionan servicios esenciales…! ¡Dales sabiduría para tomar decisiones correctas… fuerza para llevar a cabo sus responsibilidades… valor para hacer lo que sea necesario…y compasión para recordar a aquellos cuyas vidas y bienestar dependen de ellos! ¡Mantenlos seguros y saludables!

Durante este tiempo cuando el miedo amenaza con abrumarnos, nos dirigimos a ti en confianza. Guarda nuestros corazones y mentes en tu amor misericordioso para que algún día pronto salgamos de esta crisis listos y capaces de reconstruir lo que ha estado perdido. Durante esta más extraña de las estaciones cuaresmales, ¡recuérdanos de nuevo que tú eres un Dios de Vida, y que nosotros somos un pueblo de resurrección.
