Beloved family of God:
I hope and pray that this Christmas season brings you and your loved ones a deep sense of joy and peace.
We live in a world where there always seems to be too little joy and too little peace. And this year seems to be as bad, if not worse than what we have seen in a while. Vicious wars wage between Ukraine and Russia, and Israel and Palestine. Massive earthquakes shatter people’s lives in the Philippines and Nepal. Countless shootings devastate the lives of individuals, families, and communities across the United States. The globe continues to warm producing powerful storms in some locations and causing drought in others. Around the world, racism, anti-Blackness, anti-Semitism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, and xenophobia all seem to be on the rise producing fear and all too often inflicting violence on the most vulnerable communities. Homelessness and potential homelessness have reached epidemic levels in Los Angeles and many other cities and towns across this nation. And of course, a flood of fentanyl, crystal meth, and other illicit drugs continue to steal and destroy the lives and wellbeing of countless numbers of God’s beloved children. In spite of John the Baptist’s cry to prepare the way of the Lord, we are not prepared to greet the coming of the promised messiah, and perhaps we never will be.
Yet, miracle of miracles, the messiah comes anyway. The Christ Child was not born into a world of abundance and compassion; he was born into poverty. His birth was not attended by political, social, and religious leaders, but by shepherds. And he was not laid in a beautiful and cozy bassinette, but in a manger typically used to feed cattle. I suspect that even his swaddling clothes were dirty. The Savior of the world was born into the midst of this world’s darkness and sin. He was born into the family of a carpenter and his betrothed (but not yet fully married) teenage wife. He was born in small and insignificant town in an occupied land under the thumb of a cruel empire. Yet in all of that, the most important news of all was that he was born. “The light shines in the darkness,” as the gospel of John reminds us, “and the darkness could not extinguish it.”
The Christ Child and the hope he represents for a world of peace and abundance, compassion and equity continue to be born anew in the difficult and often tragic circumstances that afflict our own time. Our task is to build on the hope given us by the birth of Jesus to build communities where health and wholeness, generosity and care, safety and love can thrive.
During this season, where we celebrate birth of the Christ Child into this world that so desperately needs salvation, I invite you to consider supporting Echo Park United Methodist Church above and beyond your already amazingly faithful support. Amada familia de Dios:
Espero y oro para que esta temporada de Navidad les traiga a ustedes y a sus seres queridos un sentido profundo de gozo y de paz.
Vivimos en un mundo en el que siempre parece haber muy poco gozo y muy poca paz. Y este año parece estar tan malo, si no peor de lo que hemos visto en mucho tiempo. Se libran guerras despiadadas entre Ucrania y Rusia, e Israel y Palestina. Terremotos masivos destrozan la vida de las personas en Filipinas y Nepal. Innumerables tiroteos devastan la vida de personas, familias y comunidades en todo Estados Unidos. El globo continúa calentándose, produciendo poderosas tormentas en algunos lugares y causando sequías en otros. En todo el mundo, el racismo, la antinegritud, el antisemitismo, la misoginia, la homofobia, la transfobia y la xenofobia parecen estar aumentando produciendo miedo y, con demasiada frecuencia, infligiendo violencia a las comunidades más vulnerables. La falta de vivienda y la posible falta de vivienda han alcanzado niveles epidémicos en Los Ángeles y en muchas otras ciudades y pueblos de todo el país. Y, por supuesto, una inundación de fentanilo, metanfetamina cristalina y otras drogas ilícitas continúan robando y destruyendo las vidas y el bienestar de un sinnúmero de hijos amados de Dios. Sin embargo, milagro de milagros, el mesías viene de todos modos. El Niño Cristo no nació en un mundo de abundancia y compasión; nació en la pobreza. Su nacimiento no fue asistido por líderes políticos, sociales y religiosos, sino por pastores. Y no estaba acostado en una hermosa y acogedora cuna, sino en un pesebre típicamente utilizado para alimentar al ganado. Sospecho que incluso su ropa de pañal estaba sucia. El Salvador del mundo nació en medio de la oscuridad y el pecado de este mundo.
Nació en la familia de un carpintero y su esposa adolescente prometida (pero aún no completamente casada). Nació en un pueblo pequeño e insignificante en una tierra ocupada bajo el pulgar de un imperio cruel. Sin embargo, en todo eso, la noticia más importante de todas fue que él nació. «La luz resplandece en las tinieblas», como el evangelio de Juan nos recuerda, «y las tinieblas no la vencieron.»
El Niño Cristo y le esperanza que él representa de un mundo de paz y abundancia, compasión y equidad, siguen renaciendo en las circunstancias difíciles y a menudo trágicas que afligen nuestro propio tiempo.
