Beloved community of God’s people:

Welcome to our 2024 Charge Conference. It is good to gather together to remember where we have been and dream of where we are going as we follow Jesus.

I recall the words of the prophet Isaiah in the eighth century before Christ… words that will be appropriated eight centuries later by the Baptist John as he announces Christ’s imminent appearance… words that the church continues to use today as it anticipates Christ’s coming again:

A voice cries out:

“In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.” (Isaiah 40:3; cf. Luke 3:4)

That is  why we’re here today. We’ve been walking a road prepared for the Lord and for us by generations that have gone before. And we continue to prepare and walk that same road today knowing that generations coming after us will do as well. The packets of reports we receive and consider at this Charge Conference may not be particularly stimulating; they may in fact tend to put us to sleep. But they tell the story of two communities of road builders who have remained faithful in their efforts to surmount the challenges that have come their way over the past few years so that they may continue building the road that brings good news to God’s struggling and suffering world.

So let us take this time to remember and to dream, to celebrate and to plan, to congratulate and to challenge one another. And then, let us return to the amazing work God has called us to do. In a little more than four weeks, we will celebrate the birth of the Christ Child… not just in a manger in Bethlehem, but in our own hearts and lives. We don’t do the work alone. We’ve never done the work alone. Christ Jesus has been with us working by our side. Good news is here! Good news is coming! And God’s will will be done on earth as in heaven.

Bienvenidos a nuestra Conferencia de Cargo de 2024. Es bueno reunirnos para recordar dónde hemos estado y soñar hacia dónde vamos a medido que seguimos a Jesús.

Recuerdo las palabras del profeta Isaías en el siglo VIII antes de Cristo… palabras que serán apropiadas ocho siglos después por el Bautista Juan al anunciar la inminente aparición de Cristo… palabras que la iglesia continúa usando hoy en día mientras anticipa la venida de Cristo de nuevo:

Una voz clama en el desierto:

«Preparen el camino del Señor; enderecen en el páramo una calzada a nuestro Dios». (Isaías 40:3; cf. Lucas 3:4)

Es por eso que estamos aquí hoy. Hemos estado caminando por un camino preparado para el Señor y para nosotros por las generaciones que nos han precedido. Y seguimos preparándonos y recorriendo ese mismo camino hoy, sabiendo que las generaciones que vengan después de nosotros también lo harán. Los paquetes de informes que recibimos y consideramos en esta Conferencia de Cargos pueden no ser particularmente estimulantes; De hecho, pueden tender a dormirnos. Pero cuentan la historia de dos comunidades de constructores de caminos que se han mantenido fieles en sus esfuerzos por superar los desafíos que se les han presentado en los últimos años para que puedan continuar construyendo el camino que trae buenas nuevas al mundo de Dios que lucha y sufre.

Así que aprovechemos este tiempo para recordar y soñar, para celebrar y planificar, para felicitarnos y desafiarnos unos a otros. Y luego, volvamos a la asombrosa obra que Dios nos ha llamado a hacer. En poco más de cuatro semanas, celebraremos el nacimiento del Niño Jesús… no solo en un pesebre en Belén, sino en nuestros propios corazones y vidas. No hacemos el trabajo solos. Nunca hemos hecho el trabajo solos. Cristo Jesús ha estado con nosotros trabajando a nuestro lado. ¡Las buenas noticias están aquí! ¡Se vienen buenas noticias! Y se hará la voluntad de Dios en la tierra como en el cielo.
