Beloved family of God at Echo Park United Methodist Church:

Christmas greetings in the name of Christ Jesus, the light of the world.

As I write this letter, my thoughts go to the words of John the Evangelist, who assures his readers that light shines even in the darkest of times and that darkness will never be able to stop it. (John 1:5) They are such beautiful and powerful words of hope!

Yet I confess that there are times when I find these words difficult—moments when darkness feels completely overwhelming. I sometimes stare into the night sky and wonder what chance light has in a universe as vast and dark as ours seems to be? What will happen when the last star burns out—as scientists assure us it inevitably will? Will darkness then encompass everything?

And how is it possible to believe in God’s inextinguishable light in a world that seems perpetually overwhelmed by fear, hatred, arrogance, avarice, ignorance, indifference, anguish, and grief? All around us, we see lives being destroyed by poverty and war, famine and disease, corruption and violence. The good suffer and the evil thrive. The world at times seems hopelessly dark!

Who could have known that a child born in a stable to an unwed mother would grow up to be the Savior of the world—that a baby, whose bed was a feeding trough for farm animals, would shine light on generations of people trapped in inescapable darkness? Yet, because of that child, God’s light still shines in our own darkness, empowering hope among those who have no hope. Because of that child, life, love, justice, and joy still persist even in the face of all the challenges that confront them. That is why we still celebrate Christmas to this day.

God’s light is not, however, a reality that we can simply take for granted. We who live in God’s light have an active role to play in bringing that light to a world that too often embraces darkness and  despair. Our calling as followers of Christ is to continue loving God’s children throughout the year, even after our Christmas celebrations have ended. As theologian Howard Thurman reminds us, the work of Christmas begins when the star, the angels, the shepherds, and the kings have all gone away. The Christmas light shines brightly whenever we find the lost, heal the broken, feed the hungry, release the prisoner, rebuild the nations, bring peace among others, and make music in the heart. (Howard Thurman, The Work of Christmas)

So, may that light of God shine in us now and for all eternity.

And may the blessing of the Christ child be with us all.

Saludos de Navidad en el nombre de Cristo Jesús, la luz del mundo.

A medida que escribo esta carta, mis pensamientos van a las palabras de Juan el Evangelista, quien asegura a sus lectores que la luz resplandece incluso en los tiempos más oscuros y que las tinieblas nunca podrán prevalecer contra ella. (Juan 1:5) ¡Ellas son palabras tan hermosas y poderosas de esperanza!

Sin embargo, confieso que hay momentos en los que encuentro estas palabras difíciles—momentos en los que la oscuridad se siente completamente abrumadora. A veces miro al cielo nocturno y me pregunto ¿qué posibilidad tiene la luz en un universo tan vasto y oscuro como el nuestro parece ser? ¿Qué sucederá cuando la última estrella se apague—como los científicos nos aseguran que inevitablemente sucederá? ¿La oscuridad lo abarcará todo?

¿Y cómo es posible creer en la luz inextinguible de Dios en un mundo que parece perpetuamente abrumado por el miedo, el odio, la arrogancia, la codicia, la ignorancia, la indiferencia, la angustia y el dolor? A nuestro alrededor vemos vidas destruidas por la pobreza y la guerra, el hambre y la enfermedad, la corrupción y la violencia. Los buenos sufren y los malos prosperan. ¡El mundo a veces parece irremediablemente oscuro!

¿Quién podría haber sabido que un niño nacido en un establo de una madre soltera crecería hasta convertirse en el Salvador del mundo—que un bebé, cuya cama era un comedero para animales de granja, iluminaría generaciones de personas atrapadas en una oscuridad ineludible? Debido a ese niño, la luz de Dios todavía brilla en nuestra propia oscuridad, fortaleciendo la esperanza entre aquellos que no tienen esperanza. Sin embargo, debido a ese niño, la vida, el amor, la justicia y la alegría aún persisten incluso frente a todos los desafíos que enfrentan. Es por eso que todavía celebramos la Navidad hasta el día de hoy.

Sin embargo, la luz de Dios no es una realidad que podamos dar por sentada. Nosotros, los que vivimos en la luz de Dios, tenemos un papel activo que desempeñar para llevar esa luz a un mundo que con demasiada frecuencia abraza la oscuridad y la desesperación. Nuestro llamado como seguidores de Cristo es continuar amando a los hijos de Dios durante todo el año, incluso después de que nuestras celebraciones navideñas hayan terminado. Como nos recuerda el teólogo Howard Thurman, el obrar de la Navidad comienza cuando la estrella, los ángeles, los pastores y los reyes se han ido. La luz de la Navidad resplandece intensamente cada vez que buscamos a los perdidos, sanamos a los quebrantados de corazón, alimentamos a los hambrientos, liberamos a los prisioneros, reconstruimos a las naciones, ponemos paz entre los demás, y hacemos música en el corazón. Así que esa luz de Dios resplandezca en nosotros ahora y por toda la eternidad.

Y que la bendición del Niño Jesús esté con todos nosotros.
