Dear sisters and brothers in Christ:

I am writing to wish you a blessed New Year.

As 2018 comes to a close, let us give thanks to God for the many blessings that we have received.

I do not invite us to do this out of a spirit of naiveté. We have encountered many challenges during the year. Some of us have experienced devastating health problems. Others have mourned the loss of loved ones. We have struggled with financial difficulties, broken promises, and difficult relationships.

In spite of all these reasons for distress and complaint, we also affirm that God has been with us the whole time. We have experienced grace in communities of people who love each other. We have known unexpected peace in moments of great suffering. And, we have found comfort in knowing that God continues to be with us even in our times of grief and mourning.

Of course, we have also received numerous blessings of a more positive nature. We give thanks for life, for family and friends, for times of enjoyment and laughter, for moments of love and caring, for occasions of inspiration and excitement, and for our faith that guides and sustains us through all the circumstances that confront us.

I invite all of us to spend some time over the first few days of 2019 remembering and giving thanks for the blessings that we have received in 2018. The New Year inspires us with hope, as it should. And yet, we know that it will also bring challenges… such is the nature of life! We don’t come to this New Year with a blank slate. We enter 2019 knowing that God, who has always been with us, will be with us still… no matter what opportunities and challenges come our way!

The greatest and most unshakeable blessing we have is our relationship with God in Christ. As the gospel of John reminds us:

What has come into being in the Word was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. (John 1:3b-5)

 In Christ, we have life, and that life is a light that shines into the midst of the world’s darkness. It is a light that will never be extinguished. Now, as Jesus informs us in Matthew 5:14-16, that light shines through us: “You are the light of the world…” so “let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”

This is the source of our hope as begin the New Year… not our own determination to change ourselves or make a difference in our world… but our trust that God is at work in us to accomplish God’s purposes for transforming and renewing God’s world.

May all of us have a blessed, happy and fulfilling New Year!

Estimadas hermanas y hermanos en Cristo:

Escribo para desearles a ustedes un bendito año nuevo.

A medida que 2018 llega a su fin, demos gracias a Dios por las muchas bendiciones que hemos recibido.

No nos invito a hacer esto con ningún espíritu de ingenuidad. Hemos encontrado muchos desafíos durante el año. Algunos de nosotros han experimentado devastadores problemas de salud. Otros han llorado la pérdida de seres queridos. Hemos luchado con dificultades financieras, promesas rotas, y relaciones difíciles .

A pesar de todas estas razones para angustia y queja, también afirmamos que Dios ha estado con nosotros todo el tiempo. Hemos experimentado la gracia en comunidades de personas que aman los unos a los otros. Hemos conocido paz inesperada durante momentos del gran sufrimiento. Y hemos encontrado consuelo en saber que Dios sigue estar con nosotros incluso en tiempos de pena y luto.

Por supuesto, hemos recibido muchas bendiciones de una naturaleza más positive. Damos gracias por la vida, por familia y amigos, por tiempos de disfrute y risa, por momentos de amor y cuidado, por ocasiones de inspiración y excitación, y por nuestra fe que nos dirige y nos sostiene a través de todas las circunstancias que nos enfrentan.

Nos invito a nosotros a pasar algún tiempo durante los primeros días de 2019 recordando y dando gracias por las bendiciones que hemos recibido en 2018. El año nuevo nos inspira con la esperanza como debería. Sin embargo, sabemos que también traerá desafíos… ¡tal es la naturaleza de la vida! No venimos a este año nuevo con una pizarra en blanco. Entramos en 2019 sabiendo que Dios, quien siempre ha estado con nosotros, continuará a estar con nosotros… ¡no importan las oportunidades y desafíos que nos enfrentan!

La bendición más grande y más inquebrantable que tenemos es nuestra relación con Dios en Cristo. Como el evangelio de Juan nos recuerda:

En él estaba la vida, y la vida era la luz de los hombres.  La luz resplandece en las tinieblas, y las tinieblas no la dominaron. (Juan 1:4-5) 

En Cristo, tenemos la vida, y esa vida es una luz que resplandece en medio de la oscuridad del mundo. Es una luz que nunca será extinguida. Ahora, como Jesús nos informa en Mateo 5:14-16, esa luz resplandece a través de nosotros: “Vosotros sois la luz del mundo… Así alumbre vuestra luz delante de los hombres, para que vean vuestras buenas obras y glorifiquen a vuestro Padre que está en los cielos.”

Esta es la fuente de nuestra esperanza a medida que comenzamos el nuevo año… no nuestra propia determinación de cambiarnos a nosotros mismos o hacer una diferencia en nuestro mundo…. sino nuestra confianza en que Dios está trabajando en nosotros para cumplir con los propósitos de Dios para transformar y renovar el mundo de Dios.

¡Que todos nosotros tengamos un bendito, feliz y satisfactorio año nuevo!
