Dear family of God at Echo Park United Methodist Church:

Blessings in the name of Jesus Christ.

Governor Gavin Newsom has just issued a stay-at-home order for the entire state of California in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. A short time later, Mayor Eric Garcetti issued a similar order for the City of Los Angeles. Beginning tonight at 11:59 p.m. all Californians are being required to remain in their homes unless they need to leave to buy groceries, to seek medical care, or to get exercise. People who do leave their houses are required to maintain a social distance of at least six feet from other people.

As faithful followers of Jesus Christ, it is important for all of us to abide by the restrictions being imposed by the Governor. This is not just a matter of keeping ourselves safe and healthy, but also keeping others safe and healthy – especially those most at risk of contracting serious and life-threatening cases of the disease. While we trust God to care for us during this dangerous season, we should not put God to the test.  We have to do what we can to protect ourselves and to limit the virus’ spread.

I invite you to spend time in prayer for one another and for all who are affected by this disease. More than that, I encourage you to reach out to one another by phone, email, or online messaging to provide each other with essential support. Let us use the communications technology we have to talk together, pray together, read scripture together, laugh together, and cry together, as we seek ways to maintain and build community, even in this time that threatens us with isolation and loneliness. If you would like to be part of a communications/support network with others in this congregation, please call me and let me know, and I will help you make connections with other people who are also seeking to do so.

If you can’t get to the store, and need help obtaining food, medications, or other essential supplies, please contact me and I will help to make arrangements for you to get what you need. Already, some of the younger and healthier members of this congregation have offered to provide what support they can to those who find themselves at risk. There are also networks of support developing around the city with which I might be able to connect you.

During this time of isolation, I will be providing daily online devotions to offer inspiration and support. If you don’t have access to the internet, but would still like to have access to these devotions, let me know, and we will mail them to you.

As I indicated in my previous pastoral letter, we will be suspending all in-person worship services until further notice.  We will however have online bilingual worship services in English and Spanish that will be available online through Facebook Live. If you prefer, we will mail printed copies of the worship order and sermon to your homes.

Since the Governor’s order will last until April 19, we will not be able to hold Palm Sunday, Holy Week, and Easter worship services in our usual way. As I stated in last Sunday’s service, we will hold a celebratory service of resurrection on whatever day we are able to come back together. Every Sunday is a Day of Resurrection! Indeed, every day of the week can be a Day of Resurrection if we open our eyes, ears, and hearts to the work that God is doing in our midst. I invite you to look for the life-giving work that God is doing among us during this season of staying at home. Each and every day, let us find reason to give God thanks for the lives, the communities, and the blessings that we have been given. If we do, our day of re-gathering – whatever day that happens to be – will be truly joyful.

Querida familia de Dios en la Iglesia Metodista Unida de Echo Park:

Bendiciones en el nombre de Jesucristo.

El Gobernador Gavin Newsom acaba de emitir un orden de quedarse-en-casa para el estado entero de California en respuesta a la pandemia de COVID-19. Poco tiempo después, el Alcalde Eric Garcetti emitió un orden semejante para la Ciudad de Los Ángeles. Comenzando esta noche a las 11:59 p.m., a todos los californianos se les está exigiendo que se queden en sus casas a menos que necesiten salir para comprar comestibles, buscar cuidado médico, o hacer ejercicio. A las personas que realmente salen de sus casas se les exige que mantengan una distancia social de por los menos seis pies.

Como seguidores fieles de Jesucristo, es importante que todos nosotros cumplan con las restricciones que están siendo impuestas por el Gobernador. Esto no es sólo una cuestión de mantenernos mismos seguros y saludables, sino también de mantener a los demás seguros y saludables – especialmente aquellos que corren más riesgo de contraer casos graves y potencialmente mortales de la enfermedad. Aunque confiamos en Dios para cuidar de nosotros durante esta estación peligrosa, no debemos poner a Dios a la prueba. Tenemos que hacer lo que podemos hacer para protegernos a nosotros mismos y limitar la propagación del virus.

Los invito a ustedes a pasar tiempo en oración el uno por el otro y por todos aquellos que han sido afectados por esta enfermedad. Más que eso, los animo a ponerse en contacto el uno con el otro por teléfono, correo electrónico, o mensajería en línea para proporcionar el uno al otro con apoyo esencial. Utilicemos la tecnología de comunicaciones que tenemos para hablar juntos, orar juntos, leer las escrituras juntos, reírse juntos, y llorar juntos, a medida que buscamos modos de mantener y construir comunidad, incluso en este tiempo que nos amenaza con aislamiento y soledad. Si les gustaría ser parte de una red de comunicaciones/apoyo con otras personas en esta congregación, por favor llámenme y déjanme saberlo, y les ayudaré a ustedes a hacer conexiones con otras personas que también están procurando hacerlo.

Si no puedan llegar a la tienda, y necesiten ayuda para obtener comida, medicamentos, o otros suministros esenciales, por favor contáctenme y les ayudaré a hacer arreglos para obtener lo que necesitan. Algunos de los miembros más jóvenes y saludables de esta congregación ya se han ofrecido a proporcionar el apoyo que ellos pueden a aquellos que se encuentran en riesgo. También hay redes de apoyo desarrollando alrededor de la ciudad con las cuales yo pueda ser capaz de conectarlos a ustedes.

Durante este tiempo de aislamiento, estaré proporcionando devociones diarias en línea para ofrecer inspiración y apoyo. Si no tengan acceso al internet, pero todavía les gustaría tener acceso a estas devociones, déjanme saber, y se los enviaremos por correo.

Como indiqué en mi previa carta pastoral, vamos a suspender todos los servicios de adoración en-persona hasta nuevo aviso. Sin embargo, vamos a tener servicios de adoración bilingües en español e ingles que serán disponibles a través de Facebook Live. Ya que el orden del Gobernador durará hasta el 19 de abril, no podremos celebrar los servicios del Domingo de Ramos, de la Semana Santa, o de la Pascua en la manera habitual. Como dije en el servicio del domingo pasado, vamos a celebrar un festivo servicio de la resurrección en cualquier día que seamos capaz de volver juntos. ¡Cada domingo es un Día de Resurrección! De hecho, cada día de la semana pueda ser un Día de Resurrección si abramos nuestros ojos, oídos, y corazones al trabajo que Dios está haciendo en medio de nosotros. Los invito a ustedes a buscar el trabajo vivificante que Dios está haciendo entro nosotros durante esta estación cuando nos quedamos en nuestras casas. Que encontremos razones cada día para dar gracias a Dios por las vidas, las comunidades, y las bendiciones que hemos sido dadas. Si lo hagamos, el día cuando nos reunimos de nuevo – sea cual día que sea – será verdaderamente jubiloso.
