Day 13 of Governor Gavin Newsom’s Stay-At-Home Order for the State of California

 READING FROM THE SCRIPTURES

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. (Psalm 46:1-3)

MEDITATING ON THE WORD

 The earth is changing! It’s changing faster than any of us ever expected. In less than a month, we’ve seen our world virtually shut itself down. Travel has been restricted. Businesses have been closed. Churches have stopped gathering for worship. People have sheltered in their homes. Essential commodities have disappeared from store shelves. And, our global economy has gone into freefall.

COVID-19 has shaken our corporate sense of wellbeing. We have listened anxiously to the roaring and foaming of our politicians and public health officials. And our hearts have trembled before the prospect that millions more around our world might yet die as a consequence of this pandemic.

There are good reasons to be worried. In spite of our best efforts, disasters like the COVID-19 pandemic remind us that the world is not in our control. In the face of natural catastrophes like earthquakes, typhoons, floods, tornados, and plagues, all we can do is respond with as much courage, compassion, and wisdom as possible to mitigate harm, bring comfort and healing to shattered lives, and rebuild community.

Of course, our faith teaches us that we do not face these disasters alone. God is with us as a very present help in trouble. And yet, God’s presence among us is more than just a consolation prize – more than just a kindly pat on the back and a hearty “Better luck next time!” The scriptures assure us that God is our refuge and our strength even when the world around us seems to be in utter tumult.

To say that God is our refuge and strength is to stake our lives and wellbeing on the claim that we are more than the circumstances in which we find ourselves. We are not mere victims of COVID-19, cancer, Parkinson’s disease, congestive heart failure, Alzheimer’s disease, or even old-age. We are more than just casualties of earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, droughts, or famines. We are more than the violence, hatred, apathy, rage, oppression, or poverty that are constantly being incited against us by the principalities and powers that dominate our world. We are not defined by the positive and negative circumstances in which we find ourselves. What defines us in fact is that we are beloved children of God created in the image of God. We find our refuge and strength in that identity even during our times of deepest need.

Affirming that God is our refuge and strength is not an act of naïveté. We aren’t pretending that our faith in God will keep bad things from happening to us in our lives. We know that some of Jesus’ faithful followers have already come down with COVID-19, and some have even died.  Following Jesus has never been a talisman against the uncertainties of human existence. And yet, our experience of suffering changes significantly when we allow ourselves to believe that God is with us in it. God is our refuge and our strength even when life is at its worst… even when death looks us straight in the eye. We never cease to be God’s beloved children created in the image of God.

In the end, God is still a God of life, and we are still a people of resurrection.

PRAYING FOR OURSELVES AND OUR WORLD

We come to you, O God, Creator and Sustainer of all that is, because we believe and trust that you truly are our refuge and our strength.

We have known times of peace and plenty when you have filled our lives and our hearts with good things. And we give you thanks.

We have also known times of conflict and scarcity, when our minds and hearts have been trouble by anxiety and fear. Yet even then you have been our refuge and our strength. You have supported us in our occasions of need. You have encouraged us in our moments of fear. You have inspired us with hope in our times of doubt. And we give you thanks.

We pray that you will continue to hold this world in your love and compassion. Be the light that illumines our way through the darkness… the guide that leads us along uncertain paths… the hope that encourages us in the face of difficulties and dangers.

We pray for the fearful… that they might find courage to do what needs to be done.

We pray for the weak… that they might be strengthened to struggle for what is right and just.

We pray for the ignorant and the impetuous… that they might be granted the wisdom they need to discern and follow what is true.

We pray for the sick and the dying… that they might know your comfort and your healing peace.

We pray for those who mourn… that they might know the consolation of your Spirit and the care of your people.

We pray for doctors and nurses, caregivers and first providers, chaplains and social workers… that they might be protected as they serve your people.

We pray for community leaders and politicians… that they might lead your children with compassion and justice, with wisdom and humility.

We pray for those who live on the margins, the homeless and the unemployed, the migrant and the refugee, the imprisoned and those confined to hospitals and care facilities… that they might be treated with dignity and justice.

O God, Creator and Sustainer of all that is, guide us during this time of uncertainty that we, your people, may follow you with compassion and boldness, knowing that you really are our refuge and strength.

Remind us anew each day that you are a God of life and that we are a people of resurrection.

Amen.

Una Devoción Cuaresmal para el miércoles el 1 de abril 2020

 Día 13 de la Orden de Quedarse-en-Casa del Gobernador Gavin Newsom para el Estado de California

LEYENDO DE LAS ESCRITURAS

Dios es nuestro amparo y fortaleza, nuestro pronto auxilio en las tribulaciones. Por tanto, no temeremos, aunque la tierra sea removida y se traspasen los montes al corazón del mar; aunque bramen y se turben sus aguas, y tiemblen los montes a causa de su braveza. (Salmo 46:1-3)

MEDITANDO EN LA PALABRA

¡La tierra está cambiando! Está cambiando más rápido de lo que cualquiera de nosotros esperaba. En menos de un mes hemos visto que nuestro mundo prácticamente se cerraba. Los viajes se han restringido. Las empresas han sido cerradas. Las iglesias han dejado de reunirse para la adoración. La gente se ha refugiado en sus casas. Productos básicos esenciales han desaparecido de los estantes de las tiendas. Y nuestra economía global ha entrada en caída libre.

COVID-19 ha agitado nuestro sentido corporativo de bienestar. Hemos escuchado con ansiedad al rugido y las bravatas de nuestros políticos y los funcionarios de salud pública. Y nuestros corazones han temblado ante la perspectiva de que milliones más alrededor del mundo aún podrían morir como consecuencia de esta pandemia.

Hay buenas razones para estar preocupados. A pesar de nuestros mejores esfuerzos, desastres como el COVID-19 nos recuerdan que el mundo no está en nuestro control. Ante catástrofes naturales como terremotos, tifones, inundaciones, tornados, y plagas, todo lo que podemos hacer es responder con tanto valor, compasión, y sabiduría que sea posible para mitigar el daño, traer el consuelo y curación a vidas destrozadas, y reconstruir comunidad.

Por supuesto, nuestra fe nos enseña que no enfrentamos estos desastres solos. Dios está con nosotros como un pronto auxilio en las tribulaciones. Sin embargo, la presencia de Dios entre nosotros es más que sólo una palmadita amable en la cabeza y un cordial “¡Suerte para la próxima vez!” Las escrituras nos aseguran que Dios es nuestro amparo y nuestra fortaleza incluso cuando el mundo alrededor de nosotros parece estar en completo tumulto.

Decir que Dios es nuestro amparo y fortaleza es arriesgar nuestras vidas y bienestar en la afirmación de que somos más que las circunstancias en las cuales nos encontramos. No somos simplemente víctimas del COVID-19, el cáncer, el Parkinson, la insuficiencia cardíaca congestiva, el Alzhéimer, o incluso la vejez. Somos más que simplemente víctimas de los terremotos, las inundaciones, los huracanes, las sequías, o las hambrunas. Somos más que la violencia, el odio, la apatía, la ira, lo opresión, o la pobreza que constantemente están siendo incitados contra nosotros por los principados y potestades que dominan nuestro mundo. No somos definidos por las circunstancias positivas y negativas en las cuales nos encontramos. Lo que nos define es el hecho de que somos los hijos amados de Dios creados en el imagen de Dios. Encontramos nuestro amparo y fortaleza en esa identidad incluso durante nuestros tiempos de necesidad más profunda.

Afirmar que Dios es nuestro amparo y fortaleza no es un acto de ingenuidad. No estamos fingiendo que nuestra fe en Dios impedirá que las cosas malas nos sucedan en nuestras vidas. Sabemos que algunos de los seguidores fieles de Jesús ya han contraído el COVID-19, y algunos han muerto. Seguir a Jesús nunca ha sido un talismán contra las incertidumbres de la existencia humana. Sin embargo, nuestra experiencia del sufrimiento cambia significativamente cuando nos permitimos creer que Dios está con nosotros en ella. Dios es nuestro amparo y fortaleza incluso cuando la vida va de mal en peor… incluso cuando la muerte nos mira directo a los ojos. Nunca dejamos de ser los hijos amados de Dios creados en el imagen de Dios.

Al final, Dios todavía es un Dios de vida, y nosotros somos un pueblo de resurrección.

ORANDO POR NOSOTROS MISMOS Y POR EL MUNDO

Venimos a ti, oh Dios, Creador y Sostenedor de todo lo que es, porque creemos y confiamos en que eres verdaderamente nuestro amparo y fortaleza.

Hemos conocido tiempos de paz y abundancia cuando nos has llenado las vidas y los corazones con cosas buenas. Y te damos gracias.

También hemos conocido tiempos de conflicto y escasez, cuando nuestras mentes y corazones han sido preocupados por la ansiedad y el miedo. Aún así has sido nuestro amparo y nuestra fortaleza. Nos has apoyado en nuestras ocasiones de necesidad. Nos has animado en nuestros momentos de miedo. Nos has inspirado con esperanza en nuestros tiempos de duda. Y te damos gracias.

Oramos que continuarás manteniendo este mundo en tu amor y compasión. ¡Sé la luz que ilumina nuestro camino a través de la oscuridad… el guía que nos lleva a lo largo de sendas inciertas… la esperanza que nos anima ante las dificultades y los peligros!

Oramos por los temerosos… que encuentren el valor para hacer lo que tiene que ser hecho.

Oramos por los débiles… que se fortalezcan para luchar por lo recto y lo justo.

Oramos por los ignorantes y los impetuosos… que sean otorgados la sabiduría que necesitan para discernir y seguir lo que es verdad.

Oramos por los enfermos y los moribundos… que conozcan tu consuelo y tu paz curativa.

Oramos por los que lloran… que conozcan la consolación de tu Espíritu y el cuidado de tu pueblo.

Oramos por médicos y enfermeros, cuidadores y profesionales de primeros auxilios, capellanes y trabajadores sociales… que sean protegidos a medida que sirven tu pueblo.

Oramos por líderes de la comunidad y politicos… que guíen a tus hijos con compasión y justicia, con sabiduría y humildad.

Oramos por los que viven en los márgenes, los desamparados y los desempleados, los migrantes y los refugiados, los encarcelados y los confinados en hospitales y centros de atención… que sean tratados con dignidad y justicia.

Oh Dios, Creador y Sostenedor de todo lo que es, guíanos durante este tiempo de incertidumbre para que nosotros, tu pueblo, podamos seguirte con compasión y valor, sabiendo que verdaderamente eres nuestro amparo y fortaleza.

Recuérdanos de nuevo que eres un Dios de Vida y que somos un pueblo de resurrección.

Amén.
