A PASTORAL LETTER

Dear family of God at Echo Park United Methodist Church:

In God’s grace and mercy, we have finally arrived at that day when we can once again gather in-person to worship God and to join in loving fellowship with each other.

This day has been a long time coming. During this last year, there have had been moments of despair when we feared that COVID-19 would be with us forever.  Too many had become sick. Too many had died. Too many traditions had had to be set aside. Everything had changed… and then it had changed again… and again… and again. Sometimes, it felt as though we would never get back to normal… as if we would never get back to being a gathered community that worshipped and served together.

And yet, our time for re-gathering has finally come. The pandemic seems to have been largely brought under control in the state of California and the county of Los Angeles. Because of effective vaccination campaigns, fewer and fewer people are contracting COVID-19, being hospitalized for severe COVID-19 infections, or dying from complications related to COVID-19 disease. As a consequence, the state and county have opened up again, allowing people to return to many of the activities that they enjoyed before the pandemic started. In fact, those who have been vaccinated have even been told that they can take off their masks under most circumstances and in most places.

In keeping with this changing reality, Echo Park United Methodist Church will begin in-person worship this coming Sunday, June 20. You are invited to join us in the sanctuary at 10:30 a.m. for bilingual worship in English and Spanish. We will also hold a service of worship in Spanish at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel. Those who prefer will still be able to join us online via Zoom (https://us02web.zoom.us/j/7184544317) or Facebook Live (https://www.facebook.com/EchoParkUnitedMethodistChurch).

Of course, we will continue to follow common-sense protocols for social distancing and hygiene:

  • Those who have not been vaccinated will be asked to wear masks at all times;
  • There will be hand sanitizer and masks available for everyone;
  • All worshippers will be asked to wear masks while singing or praying aloud;
  • All who are present will be asked to keep distance between themselves and those with whom they do not share a residence;
  • Every other row of chairs in the sanctuary will be closed off;
  • Windows and doors will be kept open and fans will be utilized to provide proper ventilation;
  • The sanctuary and chapel will be cleaned and sanitized after being used.

As our bishop has suggested, our goal is not “to return to Church” but “to return to the New Church.” Things will not be the same as they have always been. How could they be? So even though we rejoice at the opportunity we are being given to come back together, we know that we are called to develop a renewed vision of who we are now and who we will be in the future.

God is still at work. May we be open to following where God leads us.

UNA CARTA PASTORAL

Querida familia de Dios en la Iglesia Metodista Unida de Echo Park:

En la gracia y misericordia de Dios, finalmente hemos llegado al día cuando una vez más podemos reunirnos en-persona para adorar a Dios y unirnos en compañerismo amoroso unos con otros.

Este día ha tardado mucho en llegar. Durante el año pasado, ha habido momentos de desesperación en los que temíamos que el COVID-19 estaría con nosotros para siempre. Demasiados se habían enfermado. Demasiados habían muerto. Demasiadas tradiciones habían tenido que ser dejadas de lado. Todo había cambiado… y luego había cambiado de nuevo… y otra vez… y otra vez. A veces, se sentía como si nunca volveríamos a la normalidad… como si nunca volveríamos a ser una comunidad reunida que adoraba y servía juntos.

Sin embargo, el momento para reunirnos unos con otros finalmente ha llegado. La pandemia parece haber sido controlada en gran medida en el estado de California y el condado de Los Ángeles. Debido a campañas eficaces de vacunación, menos y menos personas están contrayendo COVID-19, están siendo hospitalizadas por infecciones graves de COVID-19, o están muriendo de complicaciones relacionadas con la enfermedad COVID-19. Como consecuencia, el estado y el condado han reabierto de nuevo, permitiendo que la gente regresan a muchas de las actividades que disfrutaban antes de que comenzara la pandemia. De hecho, a aquellos que han sido vacunados se les ha dicho que pueden quitarse las máscaras en la mayoría de circunstancias y lugares.

En consonancia con esta realidad cambiante, la Iglesia Metodista Unida de Echo Park comenzará la adoración en-persona este próximo domingo, el 20 de junio. Se les invita a ustedes a unirse a nosotros en el santuario a las 10:30 a.m. para la adoración bilingüe en inglés y español. También celebraremos un servicio de adoración en español a las 2:00 p.m. en la capilla. Aquellos que prefieran aún podrán unirse a nosotros en-línea mediante Zoom (https://us02web.zoom.us/j/7184544317) o Facebook en Vivo (https://www.facebook.com/EchoParkUnitedMethodistChurch).

Por supuesto, seguiremos siguiendo protocolos de sentido común de distanciamiento social e higiene:

  • A aquellos que no han sido vacunados se les pedirá que usen máscaras en todo momento;
  • Habrá disinfectante de manos y máscaras disponibles para todos;
  • A todos los que están presentes se les pedirá que mantengan la distancia entre ellos y aquellos con los que no comparten una residencia;
  • Cada otra fila de sillas en el santuario será cerrada;
  • Las ventanas y puertas se mantendrán abiertas y se utilizarán ventiladores para proporcionar una ventilación adecuada;
  • El santuario y la capilla serán limpiados y desinfectados después de ser utilizados.

Como nuestro obispo ha sugerido, nuestro objetivo no es «volver a la Iglesia» sino «volver a la Nueva Iglesia». Las cosas no serán las mismas que siempre han sido. ¿Cómo podrían ser? Así que, aunque nos alegramos de la oportunidad que se nos está dando de volver a estar juntos, sabemos que somos llamados a desarrollar una visión renovada de quién somos ahora y de quien seremos en el futuro.

Dios todavía está trabajando. Que estemos abiertos a seguir a donde Dios nos guía.

Que las bendiciones de Dios sean con ustedes ahora y siempre.
