Our 120th Birthday + Nuestro 120o Cumpleaños

On October 6, 1906, a community of faithful Jesus followers came together in Echo Park to establish and charter a new Methodist Episcopal Church. The congregation initially gathered in the “Little Brown Church” located up the hill on Reservoir Street. Less than two decades later, they built a new facility at the bottom of the hill on the corner of Reservoir Street and Alvarado Street – a facility through which the congregation has served the community of Echo Park for more than a century.

The faithfulness and wisdom of our founding members enabled this congregation to be in vital ministry with our neighborhood. Over the decades, this church built loving community, baptized believers, shared the sacrament of communion, trained disciples, taught children, studied the scriptures, sang hymns, prayed prayers, solemnized weddings, helped young people transition into adulthood, and released loved ones into the gracious arms of the living God. We have also provided a space where our neighbors could come together to organize, strategize, celebrate, make art, educate, nurture, and build healthy community. Who can forget Jay Silverheels’ Indian Actors Workshop, Ruth Beaglehole and the Center for Nonviolent Education and Parenting, Head Start, the production by Grand Performances of Variedades: Little Central America,1984, Laundry Love, Echo Park Rising, the Echo Park Immigration Center, LAHSA Homeless Counts, or the numerous quinceañeras, funerals, weddings, and meetings that took place within the walls of our church building with the blessing of our church community? We have always provided  a holy, safe and healing environment where people were made whole, empowered, and transformed.

We invite you to join us for a time of worship, celebration, praying, singing, and feasting at 2pm on Sunday, October 11. We will gather in the parking lot (under a tarp) to honor our past and to embrace the future into which God is leading us. Please come! Bring your families, friends, and neighbors. Let us rejoice in  what God has done, is doing, and will continue to do in and through this church community that we love!
